KRISHNA JAYANTI/GOKULASHTAMI
1st SEPTEMBER 2010

Maha Vishnu took various avatars to protect the mortal world from evil and sin. One such incarnation was his birth as the child of King Vasudeva and Queen Devaki Devi. Gokul Ashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna. It falls on the 8th day of the dark half of the month of 'Bhadrapada' (August-September) and is one of the most popular of all Hindu festivals. Lord Krishna was born at midnight.
A twenty-four hour fast is observed on this day, which is broken at midnight. The festival is known by different names as "Krishna Jayanti", "Janma Ashtami", "Krishnaashtami" , "Gokul Ashtami", and "Sri Jayanti".

MAHASUDHARSHANA HOMAM

The Sudharsana Chakra or the divine disc of Maha Vishnu is one of the Lords prominent weapons in annihilating evil forces. The Sudharsana yantra is also as important as the Sudharsana mantra. Usually Lord Sudharsana is seen installed with eight or sixteen hands in Vishnu temples. It is stated in the Ahirbhudniya Samhita that when the devotees are suffering from the afflictions caused by incurable diseases, sorcery, or enemies, Lord Sudharsana dispels his fierce form and comes to their protection. When the last rites of the dead are not performed properly it might sometimes result in the sufferings of the progeny belonging to later generations. Scriptures state that performing the Sudharsana homa could alleviate the sufferings of this nature. Performance of this homa also stops the danger or perils which may possibly occur in future.

Maha Sudarsana Homam is for removal of all enmity and avoiding accidents. The desires of human beings are innumerable and they vary in nature. As a result, the sufferings they might undergo also are many. Sometimes it may result in incurable diseases. It cannot be said that all sufferings and ailments afflicting mankind have human solutions. There are many things, which are beyond the work of human domain. These were the areas where divine intervention was sought by the ancient seers.
This is where the mantras play a vital role. The mantras were the tools, which were used by the sages to free the world from sufferings. "mantaram trayate iti mantra" mantras are mystic syllables that free the chanter from inflictions. In the Vaishnava agamas the Sudharsana mantra is a very prominent one.

We're performing the Maha Sudarsana Homam on the 1st of September on Krishna Jayanti/Gokulashtami..You can include family members in a single order.

LORD HYAGRIVA
Hayagriva is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu with a horse head. The main purpose of this incarnation of Lord Vishnu was to recover the Vedas, which were stolen by Asuras or Demons. In this incarnation, Vishnu is worshipped in a human body with a horse head. An important temple where the Hayagriva idol is worshipped is the Hayagriva Madhava Temple at Hajo in Assam.
According to Hindu scriptures, there are two important legends relating to the incarnation of Hayagriva. The origin of Hayagriva Avatar is dealt in the ‘Shantiparva’ of Mahabharata and the Puranas.
According to one, Kashyapa Prajapati had a son named Hayagriva which means ‘one with a horse’s head.’ Through intense austerities he pleased Goddess Durga and attained the boon that he will only be killed by another Hayagriva. With this new found strength, Hayagriva started creating mayhem in the world.
The Devas approached Lord Vishnu to rescue the world and he readily agreed. But with Goddess Durga's boon to his aid, Hayagriva could not be killed. Vishnu left the battlefield to rest. He went to Vaikunta and started meditating with his head supported by his bow.
The Devas were worried at Lord Vishnu leaving the battlefield and looked for ways to wake him up and finally sort the help of termites to eat away the bow. While the termites were eating the bow, the string snapped and Vishnu’s head was severed. The entire universe trembled and Devas took refuge in Goddess Durga.
A smiling Goddess Durga – who knew what Lord Vishnu was up to – asked the Devas to attach a head of a horse on Vishnu. Brahma did the auspicious deed and now Lord Vishnu was Hayagriva. He went to the battlefield and fought demon Hayagriva and killed him.
Another legend has it that Vishnu appeared as  Hayagriva to recover the Vedas. It is said that two demons named Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas when Lord Brahma was sleeping. Brahma sought Vishnu’s help and he took the form of Hayagriva and brought back the Vedas.
Since the Hayagriva incarnation is associated with Vedas, Lord Vishnu in this form is worshipped as the Lord of knowledge and wisdom.
